Part 9 of the ‘Blog Monetization’ series. ← Previous: Support and Membership
Summary
- A digital product is a make-once, sell-forever model — ebooks, notes, templates, courses.
- No inventory, no shipping: you copy what you made once, endlessly.
- A paid newsletter brings steady income, like a subscription magazine.
- The posts and knowledge piled up on your blog are the raw material.
What Is a Digital Product
A digital product is like printing one painting over and over and selling the copies. It takes time to make, but after that it duplicates with no inventory or shipping.
It fits bloggers especially well, because your existing posts and organized knowledge are already half the product.
What You Can Sell
Anything you know or have organized is a candidate.
- Ebook (PDF) — your posts, bundled and polished
- Notes & templates — systems, checklists, config files
- Courses & video — deeper than a post
- Paid resources — datasets, example collections
Where to Sell
Services like Gumroad handle payment and delivery for you. Just put one link on your blog.
If you want to take payments yourself, a WordPress shop plugin exists too. But at first, an external service is far simpler.
Paid Newsletters
A paid newsletter is like a subscription magazine. Tools like Substack and Ghost split free and paid tiers.
If a blog is “found by search,” a newsletter is “delivered straight to the inbox.” The reader relationship grows tighter.
Sponsored Posts
Once you build some reach, brands may commission posts. But a sponsored post must also disclose that it is an ad.
Faking praise because you were paid breaks trust. Honesty is what protects long-term income.
What Matters Most
The heart of a digital product is selling “time people would pay to save.” Information you can just search for does not sell.
Hard-won know-how and time-saving templates do. The blog is the storefront window that shows the trust behind them.
The next part covers the precondition for all of this: traffic (SEO and GEO).
