Part 8 of the ‘Blog Monetization’ series. ← Previous: Comparing Overseas Affiliates
Summary
- Ads and affiliates are money from a third party; support and membership are money straight from readers.
- One-off support (Buy Me a Coffee, Toss) is a light cheer, like buying a coffee.
- Recurring membership (Patreon, etc.) is steady monthly income, like a regulars’ pass.
- Its strength: it works with even small traffic, as long as you have a few true fans.
Why Support Is Different
If ads and affiliates are the ‘indirect’ path of clicks and purchases, support is the ‘direct’ path where a reader opens their wallet for you. So depth of relationship matters more than visitor count.
It is like the hat at a street performance. Not the thousand who pass by, but the ten who stop and drop a coin, make the income.
One-Off Support
Buy Me a Coffee and Toss support are a light, one-time cheer — like buying someone a coffee. Low friction makes them easy to start.
A single button at the end of a post is enough. A gentle nudge like “if this helped, buy me a coffee” fits well.
Recurring Membership
Patreon and memberships take a fixed amount each month, like a regulars’ pass. In return you need extra value for members — private posts, early access, and so on.
It is steadier than one-offs, but only holds if you keep delivering. Break the promised value and members leave fast.
Adding It to a Self-Hosted Blog
On WordPress, drop a support button or widget into a post or sidebar. Usually it is one line of code or a plugin.
If you want to take payments yourself, a membership plugin works too. But at first, an external support service is far simpler.
What Makes Support Work
Support comes from “I want to cheer this person on.” So consistency, sincerity, and your relationship with readers are the core.
A shared-journey post (build-in-public, like this blog) earns support more easily than an anonymous info post. People back people, not information.
The next part covers the other side of direct monetization: digital products and paid newsletters.
